Double-edge

Double-edge safety razor

A double-edge safety razor holds a single flat blade in a metal head, with a cutting edge on each side. You use one edge, flip it, then replace the blade for a few cents. The head guards your skin, which is where the name comes from.

Almost every razor sold before the 1970s worked this way, and the design never needed improving. One blade, held at a fixed angle, in a head heavy enough to cut without pressure.

Why one blade beats five

A cartridge drags several edges across the same patch of skin in one stroke. The first cuts the hair, the rest cut whatever is left, including the top of your skin. That is where most razor burn comes from.

One blade passes once. If you need to go closer, you take a second light pass rather than stacking edges. It takes twenty seconds longer and it is the reason people stay with these razors for decades.

What makes ours adjustable

The collar under the head turns. Turning it moves the blade in or out, which changes how much edge meets your skin. Setting one is forgiving, three is keen, and the numbers are engraved so you always know where you are.

That matters because a fixed razor decides for you. Buy the wrong one and you learn it after you have paid. Here you find your setting in the first fortnight and leave it there.

Which blades fit

Any standard double-edge blade. They are the same shape everywhere and have been for a century, so you are never tied to one supplier. We sell a pack of ten for $4.95, which lasts most people about two months.

Double-edge questions

Is a double-edge razor safe for beginners?

Yes, at a low setting. Start at one, hold the head flat, and let the weight do the cutting. The guard is what makes it a safety razor.

How many shaves per blade?

Five to seven for most people. Change it when it starts to tug rather than glide.

Does it come with blades?

The box holds the razor. We sell a ten-pack for $4.95 so you can start the day it arrives.

What is it made of?

A brass handle with a zinc alloy and aluminium head, chrome finished. 81 grams, 88 mm long.
