What the dial actually moves
Turning the collar changes the distance between the blade edge and the guard bar. More distance means more blade in contact with your skin: closer, and less forgiving of a bad angle. Less distance means the opposite.
The numbers are engraved on the neck with a red index mark, so you can see your setting without thinking about it.
Where people end up
We went through every verified rating that mentioned a number. One buyer starts at one and calls it mild. Another tries three and calls it quite aggressive. A third says the top of the range is more than he ever needs and stays below half-way.
